Skating and Writing?

One of the highlights during our holiday time was teaching the girls (ages 5 and 3) how to skate in the rink David made in our backyard.

Based on very sound advice plucked from youtube, we focussed on learning how to fall and get up first instead of learning how to skate.

It occurred to me that this completely shifted how my girls were thinking about their approach to what success was in this situation. By focusing on learning how to fall and get back up–instead of learning how to skate–as they were falling they were winning because it was just another opportunity to practise getting back up.

Then it occurred to me, this is where my clients and I are focussing when creating sustainable change in our relationship with writing.

So, what does it mean to fall when we are writing?

For most of my clients, the falling is feeling anxious, overwhelmed or scattered resulting in procrastination and avoiding writing.

And, what does it mean to get back up again?

Well, when we focus on understanding more about our thoughts and feelings that come up around writing and learning how to move through them, we are practising getting up.

And taking it one step further…What are our feelings telling us? What needs attention here? How might I support myself here? What does it actually look like to get back up again?

And, just as learning how to fall and get back up eventually creates more opportunities to skate; creating an awareness of how we feel and practising moving through–especially it in a supported way–will create more opportunities to actually write.

If you or someone you know is struggling with feeling anxious, overwhelm or scattered that results in procrastinating and avoiding writing, please connect with me for a complimentary Discovery Call where we will begin to create clarity for you and see whether the work I do is a good fit for you or not.

Warmly,
